Life's little disappointments

Today I could not help but think back to when I was a youngster living in Alice Springs sitting on the couch watching the exciting Bourne Identity movie on television; jumping up and down in my seat as fingers were crushed in car doors and action that made you feel like you were right there. Having been inspired by this fine piece of 80's film making I picked up the book and fell in love with the Bourne stories which I have read serval times over the last few years (that's right they fit into the prestigious worth a second read category).

Having been a fan of the books and that edge of your seat movie you can imagine my excitement when it was announce that the Bourne identity was to come to the big screen. WOW!! This would be great with the special effects of today backed by a great story this was sure to be a fine piece of movie making. So popcorn in hand, I scooted off to the movies and for the first 5 minutes I was feeling ok - but at some point between the opening credits and the end of the movie whoever was making this thing had put down the Bourne identity and started reading another book. Surely they were confused? This movie did indeed have Jason Bourne in it but it was not at all the story I was expecting.

I walked away from the movies a little disappointed about the fact that the book I had loved through my teens and into adulthood had been lost along the way and replaced by some mass appeal Hollywood fluff, but at the same time I was confident that there was no way and I mean NO WAY!! that they could bring out the Bourne Supremacy, they had gone to far from the original story to salvage enough threads.

WRONG AGAIN as I am sure you all know they did it. They released the Bourne Supremacy - and being the curious critter I am - I just had to see how they had managed to get the story even a little back on track, well derrr I am such a simpleton I should have know the Hollywoods answer, Kill of a person who is central to the "real" version and don't even bother this time to try and make it look like you are following the book at all.

The name that should be placed on this movie is "riding-on-the-coat-tails-of-a-great-book-to-make-tons-of-cash" but I guess that would not fit on the DVD cover so they just had to stick with the Boure Supremacy, This movie was so far off that my jaw actually dropped at one point (I had to ring my sister for a bitch about it as soon as I returned from the movies).

I felt I had to share this warning with book lovers everywhere who love the Bourne Trilogy as much as I do, and as much as it pains me to say I am sure that they will somehow manage to bring out the Bourne ultimatum and I being a sucker for punishment will not be able to stay away.

thoughts from the grudknows editor

OH MY GOD! A good action film on it's own but NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING to do with book of the same title. Unless you want to count the main characters name.

Are you hearing anything familiar? No.

Despite having got the scripts mixed up with some other film while somehow managing to keep the main characters name the same (I think a few crossed out names and replacements could provide the answer to that) it was an enjoyable film.

However, it was not the Bourne Supremecy... not by any stretch of the imagination. (If you don't believe me compare the synopsis of the movie and the book sometime :)

I can't wait to see what they do for the The Bourne Ultimatum - if they bring it out...
