Ooks and authors

[...] I'd finished Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates, which is a totally awesome novel. I was actually going to jump with a copy - not only because it would have been kinda cool, and would've added a little mystique to my death, but because it might have been a good way of getting people to read it. But the way things worked out, I didn't have any preparation time, and I left it at home. JJ in 'A Long Way Down' by Nick Hornby

history of this page

I believe this page was created in the first few years of the grudknows.com website, I think it was originally just part of some other page, maybe. I wasn't satisfied with it as I found it too hard to pick and choose just a few favourites and so eventually I created a list of the last ten books I've read, which, while not being comprehensive at least included current books. Later, I ended up creating an archive of the books that had appeared in the latest ten listing. Sadly, this list is still missing any number of fantatic books I'd read before the creation of the list but for now, it will do.

'underground' by suelette dreyfus

Non-fiction. I really enjoyed this book, particularly the opening chapter or introduction. I borrowed a friends copy some years ago and shortly after the complete book was made available as a free text download on the 'Net. more...

nick earls

Enjoyed 'zigzag street' and 'bachelor kisses' particularly the commentary about how people living on their own develop an odd relationship with their furniture and the coffee bean scenes. I recently read 'world of chickens' which made me laugh raucously to the point that my house mate came to investigate. I then attempted to read head games to which I give 10/10 for the creme de menthe story but as a whole give about a 4/10. more...

janet evanovich

The plum novels are Silly, fluffy - hilarious. I was a bit worried about book eight, it was good, but not as good, but book 9 restored the faith. I tend to laugh my way through these books and, of course, there is ... Ranger. more...

james michener

The source. Mexico. Poland. Crunchy, full of dates. Loved them all. Read 'The Source' at least once.

'the old man and mr smith' by peter ustinov

A great book. Very funny. Very profound. A most excellent read. God and the Devil come to earth to check out the situation and no one believes they are who they say (despite the Devil making interesting parts of his anatomy vanish). It's like an onion - you can read it at several different levels. One of my all time favourites. Whoever anonomously sent me a new copy of this book - I love you, you are a champion.

roald dahl

The kids books. I fell in love with 'James and the Giant Peach' and reviewed it to my class in primary school. Our teacher ended up reading the book to the class based on my review. Since then I've pretty much read all of Roald Dahl's kids books. I own a few too. I've never watched the 'chocolate factory' film in full because a) I loved the books so much and b) because gene wilder gives me the willies - but that will all change when the Johnny Depp version is released. more...

A list of books i've set free into the wild can be viewed at the bookcrossing website.

bowvayne

In particular... Mythbusters. Why? Because it's a great story. (Bowvayne is also the only person that has ever crawled around on the floor of a pub trying to kiss my feet!). Seriously, read Mythbusters, you'll love it. His other [kids] books aren't bad either, if you can get hold of them - but if you read only one, make it Mythbusters. more...

terry pratchett

In particular, I love 'the luggage', Rincewind and Death. Next I love weatherwax and susan. I enjoy the turned-inside-outness of pratchett books and enjoyed 'maurice' and the 'gnomes' as much as the disc world series. I must say I don't enjoy every book by TP equally, but I do enjoy many.more...
