Fuel Prices

photo

Just one of many jokes circulating around the 'Net in response to the high prices of fuel across the western world at this moment in time.

Email subject 'fw: It's funny coz it's true'

Snopes informs us that this is a real photo. I had my doubts when I received it but even then, it made me smile.

Response to September 11 Tribute 'spam'

Today I receive by email a chain letter that was tagged as 'September 11 Tribute' with a poem 'If I knew' (I located a version as per the one I received in a web forum - though this forum has no direct relation to the email I received).

My response to the email was:

I agree the poem is nice... I feel awful for all people who lost their families in the September bombings... no matter who you are it's never nice to lose life so pointlessly.

My sympathies (inline with the sentiment of the poem) also go out to all of those who died by American terrorist acts to other nations - including the war on Iraq... and those that died in acts funded and supported by American dollars in the past.

My sympathies also go out to those people in New Orleans, many who have lost family and belongings - some loses which may have been avoided by Government action on the matter (budgets have been cut back consistently by the American Government even though they knew there was a high chance of such a thing happening).

Most deaths mean someone is losing a friend, family member or loved one... regardless of whether the deaths are those of our country men and women or whether they are those of some country that doesn't have the media, power, etc to publicise how devastating the deaths have been - and regardless of race, gender, religion and all the other things that generally determine whether or not we'll share our sympathies and send emails around the Internet.

Why did I respond? Well, if someone is willing to send me an unsolicited chain letter (all chain letters sent to me are definitely unsolicited) then I feel quite within my rights to reply with my own equally unsolicited response detailing my views of the content/chain-letter to the person who sent it to me along with everyone in the chain whose email address is available/visible in the same email. (I don't add any email addresses to my address book, they just get my once off reply to the chain).

The poem... and good email practices

The anti-chain letter website, break the chain tells us the poem existed prior to 9/11 and is used without permission from/or credit to the author. The poem is left undated as well, giving the impression that the poem was written in response to 9/11. [see: September 11 Tribute and Poem?]

If you feel something is so important that you must forward it on to others:

  • If emailing to lots of people, especially people who may not have each others contact details, put all of the email addresses in the BCC field to protect the privacy of those to whom you are sending the email
  • Remove all personal details, for example, email headers that include email addresses and forwarding information, etc and only leave the actual message.
  • Verify, to the best of your ability, that the email you are forwarding is actually true... there are a lot of hoaxes/urban myths in cirulation and generally a quick check on the Snopes website (or other urban myth/hoax sites) will let you know if it is just rumour of if there is validity in the claim.
  • Take time to think about who you will send your messages to - don't just send to everyone in your address book without thinking first

Doctored photos have a go at Bush

The Katrina related humour now doing the rounds of the Internet seems to be aiming directly at Bush, or at least at his administration. The photo below is not real - it's just a dig at the El Presidente. (Refer: LA Times - Web Photos Lampoon Bush)

See also The Spoof: Bush is walking on sunshine with 'Katrina and the Waves'. Please note, as per the sites name, this is a spoof - it is not a real news story/picture.

Web nerd stuff: pure CSS rounded corners

If you want rounded corners on content boxes using pure CSS (no background images) see the following sites:

Is the press biased? Does 'ism' still exist?

Got this one via email. According to the articles below (pictured) black people LOOT while white people FIND stuff!!!

Actually, along the same lines, I've always found it intriguing in news articles that they insist on stating a persons race, religion, sexuality, etc when such facts don't actually have anything to do with the article at hand. More to the point, this only seems to be done in selected circumstances. It'd be quite funny (yet equitable) to see *all* articles do the same thing - for example, 'heterosexual white female/male today was accused of ...'.

press clipping press clipping

These lots of commentary all over the 'Net on this matter see:

  • Posting from Chris Graythen, Photographer, Photo Editor. The person who took the photo of the people 'finding' the items. Though, I don't honestly think people have an issue with this caption so much as to the perceived contrast with the photos of 'looting'.
  • boing boing
  • Wiki News
  • Yahoo! News statement on photo language controversy - ironically the photo of the white people was removed from Yahoo on request but the photo of the black person was obviously ok to stay! :P
  • Snopes while verifying the pictures do exist with their respective labels, issues a word of warning regarding journalistic differences and whether the people in question were, in fact, going into the stores (looting) or just collecting floating 'stuff' (finding). (See also: Two photos pose puzzle: When is it not looting?)

Katrina Appeal - the dog ear link

Adding the Red Cross - code to add a red cross corner button/dog ear to your site.

After having this link sent to me I added it to my site by using most of the original code as provided. However, I removed the javascript (as it is pretty unnecessary), added alt/title tags and changed the link to the Australian Red Cross. Feel free to cut and paste the modified code (XHTML 1.0 compliant) below to your own web page (just above the </body> tag is probably as good as anywhere else).

I've now removed the dog ear from my site... if you want to help see also the link on this page to Michael Moore's letter and a few groups that are getting things done.

I heard the walking woman got run over by a bus today. And died. So why not do something a little more constructive? if you want to use walking for a cure, many countries run a Relay for life - why not email details about that to your friends rather than some dumb animated GIF that does nothing. OR you could visit the National Breast Cancer Centre (Australia) or some of the other sites that they link and find out other ways of helping.
