I received the information below via email from a friend.
While many hear 'The ABC' and just of the tv station, the ABC is a complete media network including radio (triple j, ABC Classic FM, dig, ABC Radio National, ABC Local Radio, ABC NewsRadio), television, an excellent news service and much more....
The ABC not only provides excellent news stories, television programmes and radio but it also supports and promotes Australians in a range of ways. I vote ABC!
I'll certainly be signing the petition as my friend suggests and hope you do the same. It's an online petition as opposed to an email petition, which means each name and 'signature' is collected once and then the entire document is presented to politicians - it's not a hoax or a waste of your time so please consider signing.
Hi,
I’ve just taken part in this national petition to restore the ABC’s funding in the next Federal budget.
www.getup.org.au/campaign/FundOurABC
The petition is being presented to politicians in Canberra -- and every signature counts.
The ABC today has $264 million less in real terms than in did 20 years ago.
The government needs to hear from us that with an anticipated budget surplus of $9.7 billion, soaring to $10.7 billion by 2009, ignoring the ABC’s plight is inexcusable.
The ABC is the eyes, ears and voice of our nation. We, its owners, have to fight for it.
Thanks for taking part in this!
NEWSFLASH (29 March 2006): The campaign is going strong! We’ve hit our target of 50,000 signatures - now let's go for 75,000! The first installment of your petition has been delivered to Costello and Minchin. We’ll continue to pressure the Government until it hands down the Budget in May. So keep signing!
We are at a turning point in the future of a fundamental and cherished Australian institution, the ABC. Right now, the Cabinet's budget committee is deciding the ABC's funding for the next three years. Their next meeting is on Tuesday.
As it stands, the ABC is $264 million poorer in real terms today than it was 20 years ago. The programs we rely on - from independent news and current and affairs to quality children's content - are under extreme pressure. In a very real sense, the integrity of the ABC is now at stake.
Let's show politicians in Canberra that the ABC's owners - the public - are prepared to stand up and defend it. For this to work, every signature counts. We've set a goal of 10,000 signatures. Will you - and your friends and colleagues - help us get there?
Dear Mr Costello and Senator Minchin,
We believe in the value of a well-funded and independent national broadcaster.
We understand that the ABC has asked you for a modest increase in funding to meet the demands of a 21st-century media outlet.
With a budget surplus of nearly $10 billion, funding the ABC is surely money well spent.
To sign the petition, go to www.getup.org.au/campaign/FundOurABC, scroll to the bottom of the page and fillout and submit the form.
