Food Renegade Response # 1

I too am an avid baked bean fan. Whilst, generally speaking, I'm not one for sticking to the rules, I agree that there are some clear guidelines that need to be considered when baked beans are being consumed. However, food rules are not for all and I feel it incumbent upon me to respond to the anonymous author's Food Rules #1

Renegade Response #1

Baked beans may only be eaten with bread or a bread equivalent.

Actually, this one I agree with. Clearly, the world has come to no good if people start eating baked beans without bread products.

Renegade Response #2

It is unacceptable to eat baked beans straight from the can.

In polite company, this would certainly be a sensible guideline. However, on a camping trip it would be deemed almost essential to stand around in the cool morning air eating the beans cold, straight out of the can and with a fork. The beans need to be cold as you've usually forgotten matches, straight out of the can because you can't be buggered cleaning up a bowl, and with a fork because you usually think you can make do without a spoon. Feel free to dip the bread into the can as you go.

Renegade Response #3

Baked beans may only be eaten hot at breakfast time on toast. ... The toast should be warm, buttered and cut into 9 squares...

Interesting notion and it's possibly a good plan to start with (excepting on camping trips). Whilst warmth and butteriness are, combined, the raison d'être for any piece of toast that intends being with beans, toast divisions are a matter of creativity and personal taste. I prefer the good old 2 x 4. Two pieces of toast, buttered while hot, and cut into 4 triangles each. Note, triangles, not squares. Some may prefer beans on their toast, but in my school toast is only there for dipping and scooping.

Renegade Response #4

.... lunch is the only time it is acceptable to have a toasted baked bean sandwich.

Pish-posh. Of course you can have baked bean toasties for dinner. Just not breakfast. That would be disgusting.

Renegade Response #5

...Cold beans should not be consumed for dinner.

Unworthy of response. Except possibly to say "Beans make you fart, no matter when or how you eat 'em."

Renegade Response #6

Only Heinz Original Baked Beans or Heinz Salt Reduced Bakes Beans should be consumed.

Whilst I can certainly see how this may be deemed necessary if your father was English, I don't think it's true for the rest of us. Of late, it's been SPC (baked beans and spaghetti, for hungry little human beeeeeans) as they are Australian owned. At least, the last time I looked they were.

Renegade Response #7

It is not acceptable to reheat previously warmed baked beans, nor is it acceptable to store or consume beans that have already been opened.

Both these things are mostly true. The commonly accepted uses for leftover baked beans are as follows: a. feed them to the cat, b. utilise them in mold-growing experiments, or, c. make merry use of them in some oh-so-funny practical joke.

#3 - one piece of toast should be left whole, and another cut into 2 triangles should be placed at diagonals to the whole piece of toast... a part of the whole piece of toast at the bottom must be visble between the two triangles.

#4 - baked bean toasties are great at any time of the day... add cheese for extra flavour.

Some of my food rules with baked beans are:

#1 Should not be eaten in any form between midnight and 9am
#2 Should not be eaten in any form between 9am and 5pm
#3 Should not be eaten in any form between 5pm and midnight
#4 Should not be a part of another food (e.g casserole)
#5 Should not be part of a trick to make someone eat baked beans when said person has food rules about baked beans

I think that pretty much covers it. Next?
